Victorian Street Signs in Olde York
Have you noticed the attractive Victorian street sign at the courthouse and also at the corner of North Congress and West Madison? This is a project of the Yorkville Historical Society. This group of people is always looking for projects that will benefit York. Most recently they have erected a monument on Yorktowne Village property in remembrance of citizens who succumbed to smallpox during the 1909 epidemic, paid for landscaping work at Moore Park, and helped sponsor “Circus Days in York.”
The Victorian street sign project began in early spring of this year. Brian Lawton of Diversified Signs worked with the society on the design, price, and addition of a name plaque. (Brian is the great grandson of beloved teacher, Agnes Lawton.) The first two signs were purchased by the Ebersold Ulbricht family in memory of Mel Ebersold and in honor of Grace Ebersold Ulbricht. A third sign, in memory of Carey Finley and purchased by the historical society, will be installed at the corner of North Congress and Kings Mountain Street in the near future. Mrs. Finley once lived at 6 Kings Mountain Street and she was very generous to the historical society.
The ultimate goal of the society is to eventually see all of the old street signs in the historic district replaced with the Victorian signs. York is such a grand old city and anything we can do to enhance the beauty of it is certainly worthwhile.
Anyone can buy these signs: businesses, churches, clubs, organizations, families, neighborhoods, individuals, etc. The signs are top quality, made to last, and cost $975 each. This price includes engraving and installation. To purchase a sign or for more information about the signs or the Yorkville Historical Society, contact Jan Ramsey at 684-3844. Please help us to make York an even more welcoming and inviting city.
